Your idea would probably work, much like using planers, like Pink Ladies, Fish Seekers, etc. My biggest concern would be trying to control the depth. With planers, leadcore, downriggers, you can control the depth they run. That's the most important part. If you see fish at 20-24', you must have confidence that you can put your lures in or just above that depth. I have used umbrellas with success, but I have trouble controlling their depth. I usually run them on a downrigger, probably 40' behind the ball, and it runs 10-12' deeper than the ball. Plus the umbrellas love to find trees, gets expensive. Downriggers can be tricky when mounting on pontoons. I have mine towards the front of the boat. I mounted the factory bracket to the square railing and then had an aluminum support welded to that bracket and bolted to the lower railing. Then I can run 2 rods with leadcore or whatever off the rear of the boat.( p.s. you can run 2 lines at different depths on each downrigger). For lures I use bucktails(BassPro 1/2,3/4 oz), sutton spoons, Shad Raps, large RoosterTails, roadrunners, etc.
