Dad and I were just getting into striper fishing when they were finishing up Russell Dam. Back then there was a big coffer dam on the Georgia side and a little slew on the SC side with a cable where you couldn't go all the way up in it. We kept hearing about all the big fish people were catching and decided to try it. We had a little 16 foot bass boat and were fairly new to boating and had never been anywhere with a heavy current. We tried to tie up to that cable with that water blasting out and came as close as I ever have to sinking a boat. I was a pretty big football playing kid and I grabbed hold of the cable and when dad took the boat out of gear the whole nose went under and the boat instantly filled up with water. I didn't realize what was happening but I was determined to not let go of that cable till Dad told me to. Luckily he told me to drop it and we didn't go down. There were a good number of boats sunk and several people killed trying to do the same thing we were doing. If you fished it a lot back then I'm sure you remember a lot more about it than I do.
Unfortunately that event spooked us so bad we didn't go back down there for a long time and missed out on the prime fishing that was going on down there during the dam construction.
