Speaking as one who had to catch my own bait for 30 years at TN, VA, NC and SC lakes, I know full-well that catching herring, threadfins and gizzards at night using lights and a castnet is a difficult and sometimes dangerous job. Filling a 600-gallon tank with 50 to 100 dozen herring each night to keep up with the demand is hard enough; there is no way to catch "big" baits on demand. You take whatever is available on any given night. Open at 4:30am? Trout, gizzes and herring always available? Two miles from Green Pond? I have ZERO complaints. Throw a castnet at 3am midwinter to get bait and you'll know why I appreciate what's available now. Don't know how anyone could improve on it IMHO.
