Good input Duck,
The Lowrance compairable unit is the model 1600[with software] aprox $550.00 to $600.00 /Garmin at max $425.00[with software], however a guy I work with told me today he found the same unit as mine at another place on the net for around $330.00,[with software] BUT I CAN NOT CONFIRM THAT PRICE. I HAVE NOT SEEN IT MYSELF YET.I WILL HAVE TO GET HIM TO GIVE ME THE WEB SITE AGAIN.
[don't get me wrong, the 1600 is a very good unit, a 160[which is the same unit w/ sounder] saved my rear the night after the SK Kids tourny on Murray, the fog was so thick that we couldn't see more than 20 ft of so. James Connor and I MOVED VERY CAUTIOUSLY BACK UP THE LAKE FRON GOAT IS. TO DREHER IS. and if it weren't for the 160 and hand held maps on James Connor's boat that night we would have had to sit and wait till mid morn the next day to move.
With the 162 you only need an external ant. if you have a hard top[I have the internal ant. and it works under my top on the pontoon, and on my dash in the car on the highway, or around town[I tested to ck it out].
If you go to the garmin web site there are links to see the different tracks.
The "FISHING HOTSPOTS" [WAAS enabled]CD shows up close and personal[so to speak], under lake structure, depth contours, old road beds, creek channels, humps, points, etc.
MOST OF THE TIME non WAAS enabled units are only reliable "WHILE MOVING" within 50-90 ft of so since the US Govt. cut off the other system.[if I am not mistaken, WAAS was developed for insteurment[sp] landings on aircraft].
