JS- First let me compliment you on how you raised your question. I've seen others raise a similar point before, but they lacked your tack and objectivity. Well done sir!
I'm a tournamant angler and a recreational angler. Every fish we catch for fun is released for all the reasons you cited. I only keep fish that I know are going to the scale in tournaments. I don't have a problem with that because I know the fish we catch is going to someone's dinner table. Since all of our Striper fisheries in SC are put-and-take, I'm good with that. However, if we could devise a system for catch-and-release tournaments, I'm for it. A Striper is too fine a fish to be caught only once.
Perhaps you could pose the question to the tournament committee at the next SK meeting. There may be some rocks thrown at first, but the club is dedicated to the sport's well being. They have demonstrated that many, many times over the years. Why not run it up the flag pole and see what happens? If I can help, let me know.
See you on the water...
