When Ron Vest installed mine a few years ago, he placed the outlet about midway between the top and bottom and used a rounded button-like fitting that directed the flow to the right and down along the wall. This soon creates a current in the tank as all the water starts to rotate counter-clockwise.

I like what I have heard about the new Surflow pumps and agree with Warren that air coming directly into the pump impeller probably does reduce the life of the pump. It probably won't be difficult to switch my Vest tank from air injection to a SurFlow and Venturi in the future.
