The next thing I would try would be using city water or water from a different source and see if the results are different.

I really don't know what could be causing this but here are some ideas for what its worth.

I use plain salt. You can buy a 50 pound bag of feed grade salt at a farm feed and seed store very cheamp. The main reason for the salt is to help maintain the proper electrolyes (blood chemistry) in the bait. The bait has an automatic regulator but the salt makes it easier form them to maintain the proper blood levels when under stress. Make sure the salt is Sodium Chloride (NaCL) and that it DOES NOT contain iodine.

As previously mentioned, it could be the oxygen content of the well water unless it is airated well before the bait is added. If it is a clean well, it could be a contaminatd bait tank. It is possible that some type of chemical or organism may have contaminated the tank. If it hasn't been cleaned lately try cleaning it with water and chlorox (400:1) should be strong enough. That is about a pint in 50 gallons. Wed down all the components including inside of hoses. I like to fill my tank with fresh water and add some chlorox and let it circulate with the pump a few hours. Then rinse the tank good. Some people like to add some baking soda to the rinse water. Let is dry completely in the sun before using.
