I have developed a formula that works well with my Grayline 30 gallon to make sure the tank is the same temp as the lake when you get there in the winter (if you know approx lake temperature). I fill the tank during the evening before the morning trip adding hot water as necessary to achieve the desired temperature. The key is to remember that the tank will drop 1/2 the temperature difference between current bait tank water temp and the forecasted low air temperature for that evening. As an example, suppose the lake temp is 50. If the forecasted low temperature that night will be 30, then I will add hot water to the bait tank until it is 70. (70-30=40 divided by 2 = 20 i.e. that tank temp will drop 20 degrees over night). By the time I start catching bait the next morning, it will be at lake temp (50).
