poly-fil works just fine, but make sure you get the kind without the fire retardent in it. if i has the retardent in it the package will say so on the front. like mike said the egg crate bed padding works good too. if you are buying your bait you wont need anything else in your filter. if i catch my bait or keep them for a few days i put some zoelite in a bag and hang it on the valve for the air intake. the zoelite and bag can be bought at pet-smart. the zoelite acts like a magnet to draw in amonia, and can hold 100x its own weight in amonia. if you plan to use charcoal or zoelite in the filter put it in the bottom of the filter below your poly-fil.
