I think she/you made a good choice, as mine has served me well, and people all over the country seem to consider them the best. I don't think there is any initial cleaning recomended, but you will need to clean it as you use it, of course. As for the filter material, I have used pillow-fill and am satisfied. It is easy and cheap enough to change every few trips. The alternative is charcoal, which I have not tried. I think it is supposed to trap some of the urine. Another consideration is how to connect the tank to your battery. A plug-in connection is convenient. But, be sure to get a substantial plug, such as those designed for trolling motors. Do not get one which might come loose.
