New Bait Tank, Now What???

My wonderfull bride bought me a new Super Bait Tank II and even though I have read the instructions I would like to know what I need to do to start using it.
Do I need to clean it first
Also If I read correctly there are a couple of types of filter materials to use. If this is true what are the pros and cons of each?
