Reggie,
Have you considered using a box filter for an aquarium. They are pretty simple. The box has a lid on the top with a filter plate on the bottom. You place your filter floss on the top of the plate in the box, then replace the lid. The box has a lift tube and an air tube which allows a pump to force air under the plate which then rises up the lift tube. This action pulls water along with the bubbles up the lift tube and out of the box. The water in the tank is drawn through holes in the lid, through the floss then back up through the lift tube. If you can find a large enough one of these it should work guite well. I would recommend using some marbles to weight the box down. Obviously, you'll also need a DC air pump and some airline tubing as well. Then you can remove the foam filter from your keep alive pump so that you're not always cleaning it. Hope this helps.
