homemade filters

anyone out there have a good idea for a filter box? My tank doesn't have a extra compartment and I use the keep alive areator. tank works good but I have to keep pulling the areator out and washing it over the side of the boat (it has a foam filter around the base)

has anyone had any luck making one? thanks for your help.
