Chipper- I use balloon rigs in two ways. First to hold trolled bait at a fixed depth. In this mode we simply affix a balloon to a free line at the depth we desire. As the bait tries to swim down to the bottom they're restrained by the balloon. This is most usefull when trying to tempt suspended fish. The second use of balloon rigs doesn't involve trolling, but is a tactic to deal with high winds. High winds often "push" bait into coves and pockets. Trying to pull freelines cross-wind into these closed spaces is about as usless as hoping for a honest politician in November. To get bait back in the cove, we anchor offshore and float balloon rigs back into the fish, using the wind to move the balloon.

Hopefully that's of some help.

See you on the pond,
TomB
